GlobalCenter's New Service Offers a "Plug-and-Play" Solution to Speed the Availability and Performance of Dynamic and Static Web Site Content
SUNNYVALE, CALIF., October 25, 2000 - GlobalCenter Inc., a Global Crossing Ltd. (Nasdaq: GBLX) subsidiary and leading Internet services company, today announced it will begin offering a fully managed Content Acceleration ExchangeSM service developed through a partnership with Novell, Inc. (Nasdaq: NOVL), the leading provider of Net services software. GlobalCenter's Content Acceleration Exchange service increases the speed of GlobalCenter customers' dynamic and static Web site content on a global scale, offering a solution to maximize performance without requiring additional custom development or investment in Web server infrastructure. The new service is currently available at all U.S. GlobalCenter data centers, with plans to expand in Europe by year-end 2000 and Asia Pacific in 2001.
The Content Acceleration Exchange service allows GlobalCenter's customers to deliver content with unparalleled performance. The network-based service increases the effective capacity of existing Web servers by an order of magnitude, dramatically improving Web site response, increasing the number of page views and enhancing the viewer experience without requiring additional custom development. Additionally, the service provides customers with flexible control over downstream content distribution by dynamically configuring content for use with content distribution networks, freeing them from network-specific commitments.
"The development of the Content Acceleration Exchange with Novell demonstrates GlobalCenter's commitment to deliver leading Internet tools and solutions, such as scalability and reliability, to our customers," said Leo Hindery, Jr., Chairman and CEO of GlobalCenter.
The Content Acceleration Exchange service will provide customers with access to the entire worldwide network of GlobalCenter data centers. The service blasts content worldwide, eliminating Web server bottlenecks. There are no set-up fees, capital expenditures or staffing requirements. The service complements existing content distribution networks and is a completely managed turnkey solution backed by GlobalCenter's professional support staff 24X7.
Activation of the Content Acceleration Exchange service occurs at GlobalCenter's extensive network of data centers. Once activated, the service is placed in front of the customer's origin Web server. As it receives requests for Web pages and other material, the Content Acceleration Exchange service retrieves files from the original server, saves them in cache and then forwards them to the requesting end-users. Because the files are cached, all subsequent requests for the information are now served directly from the local Content Acceleration Exchange copy, dramatically increasing the performance of the Web servers.
GlobalCenter and Novell recently partnered to accelerate the file sharing community for the Blair Witch WebFest, an online convention in support of the highly anticipated release by Artisan Entertainment of Book of Shadows: Blair Witch 2. The partnership ensured the successful delivery of user content during the event by using GlobalCenter's Content Acceleration Exchange service. As the worldwide community interacted in WebFest, Novell's JustOn Internet file storage and sharing Web site facilitated easy sharing of film footage, original artwork, music and other media content between participants. GlobalCenter provided the complex Web hosting services for parts of the WebFest, including the Content Acceleration Exchange service to help make the event successful.
"As demonstrated with the Artisan's WebFest, GlobalCenter's solution, based on Content Exchange, allows web site operators and content providers to completely scale with demand without incurring any hardware or software costs," said Simon Khalaf, vice president and general manager, Net Content services, Novell. "By powering GlobalCenter's Content Acceleration Exchange service, we can help address Web server bottleneck before content is even placed on the Internet to ensure a consistent consumer experience."
