<<Fortunately, they WILL be able to elect a Speaker of the House(I think). That will probably elect Dennis Hastert again as Speaker.

If this isn't resolved by early Jan and Maria Cantrell wins the WA seat, Mr. Speaker will become the Acting President of the United States. >>

In your scenario does Strom become VEEP (see below)?

Senator Strom Thurmond, 97, Hospitalized
By Andy Sullivan Sep 30 11:42pm ET

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Republican Sen. Strom Thurmond, at 97 the oldest man ever to
serve in the U.S. Senate, was recovering in a Washington hospital Saturday evening after
falling ill earlier in the day, a spokeswoman said.

``He's actually doing very well; he's in good condition; he's alert; he's in a good mood,''
Thurmond spokeswoman Genevieve Erny told Reuters in a phone interview.

A spokesman at Walter Reed Army Medical Center said Thurmond was listed in fair
condition.

Doctors performed a battery of tests on Thurmond, Erny said, and will hold him in the
hospital at least through Monday morning for observation.

If he is released Monday he is expected to open Senate proceedings at noon, she said.

Thurmond was dining with a staff member and an acquaintance when he briefly lost
consciousness.

As the senior Republican in the Senate, Thurmond holds the post of president pro tempore,
making him third in line to succeed the presidency behind Vice President Al Gore and House
Speaker Dennis Hastert.

Hi Greg,

The Senate is still not determined...last check was 50 to 49 in favor of Republicans, with a WA seat still in doubt. IF that goes Democrat, no VP can get elected.

Not to go into picayune detail here, but it is my understanding that Al Gore is the Vice President until the day of the Inaugural. I could be wrong about this, but I believe Gore would preside over the Senate on Jan. 5 as things stand now. At any rate, it certainly is a mess no fiction writer could ever have concocted. At least not a sane one. <g>
