I have long suspected that Buchanan secretly moved to the Reform party because he wanted to destroy it so that it would stop hurting his former party. That would have been a move fitting of his prior mentor, Tricky Dick. And it would seem that he did indeed destroy the Reform party quite nicely. But with his comments today, I question my prior suspicions. Instead I think he just wants a home, and that he is simply the type of politician that destroys everything. When dividing and destroying the Republican party proved to be too formidable a challenge he moved to an easier party. His political career should be over after his performance this year, but I'm sure that like a bad penny we haven't seen the last of him.

Interestingly, although the National Media hasn't pointed it out, Buchanan was actually beaten in a large number of states, perhaps more than half, by Browne, and may have been beaten by Browne when nationwide totals are added. The Libertarian party has long been on the verge of becoming a factor, but has constantly been overshadowed by the latest 3rd party de jour. Their most serious challenge would have been in 1980, but then John Anderson jumped into the fray and attracted the media attention as the "alternative", and so it has gone ever since for the hapless Libertarians. They do remain the only third party that I know of that has beaten either of the major party candidates in any states (Clarke edged out Carter in Alaska in 1980 for 2d place, far behind Reagan).

As for Ralph, he didn't do quite as good a job as Ross Perot of building a party, but he did it with a lot less money. I doubt we've seen the last of him, either.
