Cary,

Laurence Tribe was interviewed by Charlie Rose last night and a prominent NY election attorney was interviewed by Bloomberg News this morning. Both called the ballot "illegal" and suggested that calling for a new election in PB County might be an appropriate remedy under controlling Florida law. Many on this thread will dismiss this as East Coast liberal media bias, but both thought that Florida law was pretty clear on this issue.

For investors I think the message is that we may be setting ourselves up for a heck of a year-end rally. I am assuming that the political confusion should be cleared up by yearend to permit "normal" meeting of electoral college 12/18 and inauguration day 1/21. But in these whacky times, I suppose these dates could be changed if necessary.

Things would need to proceed fairly quickly to permit adequate notice so as to ensure a fair revote in PB. Judge must rule quickly and appeals process must move very quickly before a new PB election could be called. If delay overlaps inauguration, things could become much messier.

As investors we ought to be able to monitor whether the judicial process appears to be moving as expeditiously as needed to avoid such a messy outcome and make appropriate decisions accordingly. Basically I see these political events as exogenous and emotional factors that have a strong effect on stocks in the short run but none whatsoever in the long run. I hope your CDs mature soon or are no-penalty because I anticipate excellent bargains ahead.
