Yes, your points are all valid. But I do find it odd that the extremely strong historical tendency has been that Presidents who win close elections don't get a 2nd term.

Presidents who win blow out elections in their first term typically get a 2nd term UNLESS things screw up during that term.

And then there's Jimmy who wins a close election AND also has problems in his term...Reagan's co-star in "Bedtime for Bonzo" would have beaten Carter in 1980.

Hate to be cynical but whoever gets it this year is going to have a very hard time getting re-elected, if history is any judge.
