....The investigation began when Todd Vinson, a law clerk living in Miami but registered to vote in Pensacola, complained last week to his father, U.S. District Judge Roger Vinson, that he never received either of two absentee ballots that elections officials said they mailed to him.

The Pensacola-based judge called Escambia County Elections Supervisor Bonnie Jones, who had her staff review all absentee ballots. They found a ballot with the younger Vinson's name on it, but the signature did not match his. Also, the address of the witness who signed the ballot was fictitious, Edgar said.

Jones faxed a copy of the signature to the son who confirmed it was a fake.

"It was clearly forged," Todd Vinson said. "Somebody definitely got hold of it and sent it back in. The question is where did they get it, and my speculation was that it happened somewhere in the post office. It made it down here to Miami, but it never made it to me."

Jones then contacted state prosecutors, U.S. Attorney Michael Patterson and the Florida Division of Elections. Escambia elections officials Wednesday discovered a second suspected forged absentee ballot that also has been handed over to prosecutors.

What affect the fraudulent ballots will have on national, state and local elections will depend on how many are discovered. Neither of the suspect ballots has been opened, so it is impossible to determine who they were designed to help....
