It seems absentee ballots are slow to count in general - probably the verification that people only voted once? In Oregon I believe they are comparing the signatures with voter registration cards. Saw on the TV - at least they use computers for the registration cards rather than pulling them out of a hard-copy file. Maybe just need a first stage automatic comparison then hand-check the remainder (like the USPS).

I wonder how the absentee ballot system will work in FL...they have until next week and obviously with the race in a dead heat, people will be motivated to fill theirs out and submit it.
