Is it okay for Al or George to give up?
Behind the horse race aspect of this, is the very real fight of one side which wants a certain direction - small gov, tax cuts etc. its interests growth probably v the other side which wants a bigger chunk of the pie, bigger safety net and so on. The 2 silver spoon candidates are just placeholders, what right do they have to walk away. The Judges will have to get involved to give this some closure.
And may be after that there may be some symbolic stuff like Bush passing some small gun control laws or hiking the minimum wage or something, just like you needed a Bill Clinton to pass welfare reform, ie Use each party to confront its own extreme wing.
