Its seems to me quite disingenuous to whine about this after the fact given that: 1) this type of ballot has been used in previous elections both within Florida and throughout the US with apparently no problem 2) this type of ballot was also used in this election elsewhere in Florida with apparently no problem 3) the ballot was developed by a Democrat 4) the ballot was reviewed and approved prior to the election by both political parties 5) the ballot was widely disseminated prior to the election > It is an insult to one's intelligence to argue that more > than 3,000 elderly Jews intentionally voted for Pat > Buchanan, when every piece of anecdotal and statistical > evidence clearly indicates that they intended their votes > to go for Al Gore. I think it is even more insulting to one's intelligence to suggest that in such a large population as that in question that the only voters for Pat Buchanan would have to be confused elderly Jews, which is exactly what the above implies. > What's more, the extremely confusing ballots they were > using were a clear violation of the state's regulations. Perhaps, but where were the complaints about these (and other similar) ballots before the election? > Florida law specifies that ballots be constructed in such > a fashion that voters mark an "X" in the blank space to > the right of the name of the candidate of their choice. > Well, Buchanan's name was placed to the left. How much > clearer does that need to be? Ahhhh, so now I understand. The voters who made the mistake did so because, being well-versed in Florida ballot-format law, they knew that the punch-hole for Buchanon must be located the right of his name. So they just assumed that the punch-hole to the left of his name and next to the arrow by his name must be for Gore even though it was NOT next to the arrow by Gore's name. Yes, got it now. But, of course, this would mean the ALL of the punch-hole ballots used in Florida must be illegal since there is no place to mark an X next to the candidate's name. ~dbf
