I was surprised to learn that double voting is a relatively common error, even in counties that don't use the butterfly format.

I hope the recount is allowed to determine the Presidency, with the agreement of both parties.

FL,

I think you're missing the point about accountability. Tekboy wrote: "that's ultimately their fault for not taking the time or care to make sure that the ballot was marked correctly." You countered with: "I think these people actually thought they had marked the ballot correctly." The point you appear to be missing is that the reason they thought that is beacause they didn't take the necessary time or care to do it correctly as did roughly the other 90% to 95% of the people who voted using the same ballot.

I think these people actually thought they had marked the ballot correctly - "Hmmm, that's odd...two holes...oh I see, two names here...OK, one punch for Gore and another punch for Lieberman....good." Everyone knows you cannot vote twice for president and virtually no one would have submitted such a ballot.

Here's the ballot in question:

is it confusing, especially if you're seeing it for the first time and are perhaps expecting something else? yes. could one make a mistake, especially if you're careless, or in a hurry, or from the South? yes. Should a reasonable voter have been able, if they took the time and trouble, to figure out where to mark? Also yes--which is why 95% of the voters in Palm Beach were able to get it right.
