i think regardless of what the vote count turns out to be, some significant damage to the country has already been done, and its not easy to reverse it.

I don't know about CNN, but MSNBC is doing nothing other than reporting what the Associated Press is reporting. For some reason unexplainable by me, the Associated Press all day long has been reporting far more counties having been counted than the "official" record indicates. As I write this post, MSNBC is reporting that two of the counties that have already been included in AP's count are changing their numbers.

I believe that the "official" record is being misrepresented as such. Currently, washingtonpost.com notes that with 53/67 reporting, Bush is up 17XX votes. From what I understand, the state is refusing to divulge any numbers until the recount is done, meaning that the last "official" numbers are pre-recount.

You're right about the invalidity of the AP numbers. Aside from the fact that we should all be pretty skeptical of the press's ability to call this so far, at least two counties are re-recounting. One of them is palm beach (at Gore's behest). There are two types of ballots in PBC that the dems think will help them (I don't know about the other county):

--I guess the absentee ballots weren't punched, but pencilled in. Some of them weren't filled in very darkly, so cannot be read by computer. Since most voters (absentee or otherwise) in PBC are dems, this should help them

--Of the 19000 Gore-Buchanan votes, some were only partially punched for Buchanan, and fully punched for Gore. The dems argue that these can be understood by humans, but not machines. I expect the republicans will have a gripe with this, but given their desire not to challenge the decisions of electoral officials, they'll let it go (not. nor should they).

This is some pretty amazing stuff. Even the french are making fun of us. On tuesday night, the russians expressed their concern, and offered to send over a delegate to help ensure an election free from fraud. Upon hearing this, CNN's right-wing pundit Tucker Carlson suggested that vodka be banned from the Duma (Russia's parliament).
