Fiber glut pours cold water on carriers'
dreams
By Emma McClune, Total Telecom, in
Vienna

09 November 2000

Too many carriers, a glut of fiber in the ground, and too many businesses offering
near-identical services - that was the message of this year's CWM wholesale carrier
conference in Vienna.

Working in the shadow of the recent Iaxis bankrupcy and the more recent
speculations surrounding PSINet's financial health, the mood of this year's
conference contrasted sharply with the heady optimism of the last, say conference
goers.

Gone are the days of taking on big debt to fuel global glass pipe dreams, the
attendees of this Autumn's conference are a far more cagey bunch.

What can I say? They're whores. But research and trading are supposed to have a Chinese wall between them.

I recall an incident a few years back where someone I know had over $1 million at Merrill invested mostly in semiconductor and PC stocks. Her broker, who was making a killing off all her trading, didn't bother to give her a heads up the day before Tom Kurlak unleashed one of his temper tantrum turds at Intel, which tanked the living boohunus out of everything in her portfolio. I can only surmise that the sales staff didn't know the hit was coming, and that's proper.

The way they're trying to push these FO "pre-revenue" -isn't that a hilarious term - IPOs out the door before it closes is pretty suspicious too, don't you think? Shades of MTHR, GDEN, etc.? Beats me but you have to wonder.
