Is it impossible for a D to believe that D policies are "for the good of the country"? Do you believe that everything any D or D-sympathizer says to be by definition selfish, and unpatriotic? It sounds like you prefer to believe all charges against D's and claims by R's, and disbelieve all claims by D's and charges against R's. Those "Palm Beach zombies" include more than a few men who served the United States in war. Was hearing one such man the other night describe spending two years in a Japanese prisoner of war camp during World War II. I'd say he has at least as much of a right to have his voice heard and his vote counted as you or me. I am not strongly partisan in this election. I do believe that Gore is eminently more qualified, but I don't favor his entire agenda by any means. I do wish that the Rs had put forward a more impressive, qualified candidate, but I suspect the grown-ups he's assembled will be there to hold his hand when a crisis comes, and I doubt he'll do much to upset the overall consensus on, say, basic environmental protection or preservaton of social security. I think it's possible that if the Rs take power, they will have difficulties to deal with not entirely of their own making, but those are the breaks, and they may very well end up with a perfect opportunity, a la Reagan, to take credit for a cyclical recovery. In short, I think this "crisis" (whose effect on the country one way or the other has yet to be determined and may not amount to much at all) may merely serve to reinforce the larger message of the election, that the voters prefer stalemate to big moves in any direction, while waiting for someone to come along whose person and whose message constitute a more inspiring overall package, or, perhaps more accurately, answer a more pressing call than our country's current situation seems to have provided.
