The Southern states were afraid the Northern states with more population would over ride them on the issue of slavery so the electoral college was placed in the Constitution to give the southern states more electoral power. The biggest winner was Virginia which also got more votes because every black was counted as 2/5 of a person. This is how we got the electoral college. The purpose was to appease the South on the issue of slavery. The electoral college is anti-democratic. We are witness to the anti-democratic results of the electoral college. It results in the disenfranchisement of millions of voters. Now, we get a President selected by minority vote who will not get the support he needs to lead. A very weak President is the result.
