<< Lehman is the second analyst to confirm US carrier migration to 1X as an upgrade to 3G >>

I presume you are referring to Tim Luke of Lehman Brothers?

Confirmation ????

First we have Luke stating:

"We believe growing evidence that some carriers currently using TDMA and iDEN technology may be considering upgrading to Qualcomm`s 1X-CDMA technology as they migrate to data enabled networks may be viewed as a major strategic positive for QCOM."

Confirmation ???? ("considering upgrading")

He then goes on to state:

Respected journal `Telephony` has reported this week that Bell South International in Brazil is considering migrating to 1X-CDMA technology in order to provide wireless data ahead of its rivals. We believe success in Brazil could potentially lead US parent Cingular(SBC/Bell South) to consider 1X.

Confirmation ???? (considering migrating).

His source of Confirmation ???? (Lynette Luna writing in "Telephony"?

Luke also states:

While we do not expect major decisions until early CY01, our checks indicate QCOM is in discussions with all major TDMA carriers regarding 1XCDMA.

Confirmation ???? (QCOM is in discussions)

Or maybe this is cofirmation from First Union Securities?

"We have confirmed that several TDMA and iDEN carriers are looking at implementing CDMA2000 1x instead of previously announced migrations to EDGE or W-CDMA. This is not contemplated in our estimates or valuation models."

Presumably this was Mark Roberts? Perhaps he is the first analyst you refer to? Who did he confirm this with? Lynette Luna?

Confirmation ???? (looking at implementing)

Do you seriously consider that these statements "confirm US carrier migration to 1X as an upgrade to 3G?"?

I certainly hope these are not your examples of "Bellsouth and Nextel are publicly stating they may convert their networks to 1X HDR over the next 3 years."

You asked Mika to look for links. He didn't find any that confirm what you are saying.

I did the same. I couldn't find any. Just the usual speculation. Same ole, same ole. Vintage Roberts. Vintage Luke. Have we heard from Jon Dorfman, Craig Ellingsworth, or Alex Cena? I'm sure that they will be saying similar. I also hope that all US TDMA or iDEN carriers are considering a cdma2000 upgrade path.

Did you send us on a wild goose chase? <g>

Only thing new is Lynette backing up Andrew in speculating AWE going GSM. Gilder should be interesting on that one.
