I was just made aware today that I had been blinded by all the media talk of the magic number of 270 electoral votes. The 270 vote count number is only significant if and only if EVERY state is able to complete its elector selection. I had been under the erroneous impression that if the Florida ballot were to not be resolved in a timely manner, the electoral college would give way to the House and one vote per state. This would have favored Bush. However, in actuality, it is a majority of electoral votes, not 270, that is required. If Gore has more electoral votes without Florida, he would win in the electoral college if he can prevent Florida from participating. All he needs to do is muddy the chain of apparent responsibility for the failure of Florida to reach a conclusion.
