As the market continues to tank, and sour economic news continues to pervade, I'm wondering why the two candidates aren't scrambling to declare themselves the LOSER. How many of us would like to walk in and take over a mess like this?

We are a confederation of states. Our legislature is a hybrid of members based on population (House) and members based on their state (Senate). So too the Presidency. It has stood us well for our history. Better, IMHO, than any other governmental system. That is because our system requires broad consensus for change. This is in contrast to parlimentary systems which can have several major direction shifts within a single year. The need for broad consensus reduces tension. People rarely feel the need to take to the streets. Sure, we feel a lot of tension right now but I suspect most of us want some kind of quick resolution so we can get on with our lives.
