First of all, the vote differential in FL is on the order of 300 votes out of 6mm cast. The other states are all much smaller with much wider vote differentials(IA--5000; NM--5000,WI--8000, NH--8000). Moreover, the charges of irregularity in those states pales in comparison to the problems with that Palm Beach ballot. Those other places are merely red herrings used by both sides to threaten the other.

And with respect to Gore, or Bush for that matter, withdrawing from the contest, I offer an edited and enhanced repost of what I said yesterday:

What bothers me the most is when I hear a partisan say, "For the good of the Country, Mr. [whoever] should step aside”. I hate that statement because it reminds me of the phrase, "this isn't personal, it's business." In both cases, the person uttering the words has their own Agenda and is lying through their teeth. Both sides should fight for all they are worth. I wouldn't expect less from someone seeking the office of President of the United States.

I heard Chris Matthews of MSNBC liken this situation to the story in the Bible about King Solomon and the two women who claimed they were the mother of the same baby. King Solomon asked them if it would be acceptable to cut the baby in half and give half to each woman. At that point, the real mother offered the baby to the other woman.

With all due respect to Mr. Matthews, the US isn’t a baby. It is 224 yrs old, annealed by more trials and tribulations than one can imagine. We have gone through: a Revolution, a 2nd war with England, slavery, a Civil War, two Presidential Impeachments, a Presidential resignation, four Presidential assassinations, four other Presidents that died in office, two World Wars, Korea, two other major leaders assassinated 60 days apart, riots in the streets over race and Vietnam, and countless other slings and arrows. We wear the scars from all of these events as badges of courage and freedom and are stronger for them.

After all that, if we can't withstand a bunch of lawyers litigating this ballot issue to its conclusion, then we have no business calling ourselves the leader of the Free World.
