Active Voice (ACVC: news, msgs) rose over 28 percent after the company agreed to be acquired by Cisco Systems (CSCO: news, msgs) for $266 million in stock. Cisco will also pay about $30 million in stock for Active Voice's circuit switched PBX voicemail products, which will be sold after the acquisition closes, to a new entity comprised of former Active Voice employees for $30 million. Cisco expects to record a charge of 2 cents a share related to the acquisition. Active Voice shares added $4.25 to $19.19, while Cisco shares lost 75 cents, or 1.4 percent, to $52.50.

PacificCare Health Systems (PHSY: news, msgs) advanced over 37 percent after the company reported third-quarter earnings of $5.2 million, or 15 cents a share, down from last year's profit of $69.3 million, or $1.54 a share. Excluding items, the company earned 4 cents a share, well ahead of First Call's average estimate for a loss of 7 cents a share. The company attributed the decreased earnings to rising medical costs related to its transition to per diem, fee-for-service or shared-risk arrangements with hospitals. PacifiCare also said it expects fourth-quarter earnings to come in between 20 and 30 cents a share, well ahead of First Call's average estimate for a profit of 7 cents a share. Revenue rose 14 percent in the latest three months to $2.87 billion from $2.51 billion in the same period last year. The shares rose $4 to $14.69.

Qualcomm (QCOM: news, msgs) plunged 36 percent after the company said the European Patent Office has upheld three of its patents covering important features of CDMA systems from challenges initiated by Nokia (NOK: news, msgs) . Qualcomm shares rose $4.25 to $14.88.

"QCOM plunged 36 percent", I think not. My "fuzzy math" shows the Q up over 5%. I think this reporter's style is risky and bad for America. :)

golf, I was involved with tech decisions at SBC, though none of this magnitude. I did have the opportunity to see several of their 'arguments' for TDMA. They made statements anyone here would laugh at. IMHO, they will never switch. BLS will dump their TDMA network on SBC and buy PCS or use brand new spectrum for CDMA if anything ever comes available. I could see SBC moving to W-CDMA, but it is unclear how they would accomplish this in the current spectrum-constrained environment.

I hope I am wrong!!!!

Edit: If I can find the E-Mail with the most outragious statements, I will post some of the better zingers. I don't want to bring up details without the 'goods' to back it up!
