NEW YORK -- Shares of Qualcomm Inc. (QCOM) jumped following
news that the European Patent Office upheld the validity of the company's
Code Division Multiple Access, or CDMA, patents.

Nokia Corp.'s (NOK) Nokia Mobile Phones Ltd. had challenged the
validity of Qualcomm's CDMA patents.

Recently, Qualcomm shares changed hands at $76.25, up $3.56, or 4.9%,
on volume of 10.3 million, compared with the daily average of 14.6 million.
Thursday, Qualcomm shares rose 5.2%.

In a Friday morning research note, Lehman Brothers analyst Tim Luke
wrote that Cingular Wireless, the joint venture between SBC
Communications Inc. (SBC) and BellSouth Corp. (BLS), may use
Qualcomm's CDMA technology. BellSouth International already
announced it may switch to Qualcomm's CDMA in Brazil. Luke said that
Nextel Communications Inc. (NXTL) is also considering using Qualcom's
CDMA. Luke reiterated his buy rating on Qualcomm.
