On NPR they were talking about the case where this happened before. Apparently the candidate who was going to contest the election results decided to respect the process instead to preserve respect for the country. I believe this was the 1960 Kennedy vs. Nixon(loser) election--where Daley Sr. rigged it for Illinois! Any historians, correct me.

As long as voters continue to have nano-second memories, politicians have no motivation to behave in any manner other than to adopt the win at all costs strategy we see so commonly employed these days.

We get the leaders (and also-rans) we deserve.
