I use stops in an overall market downtrend. And I'm buying in lots of 100 shares, with 2-3 pts stops as an average, So my max loss is small. For building a position it's impossible to call a bottom so nibbling is the way I do it.

This is how I built a large position on BEAS, started buying in the 40s, held it for months - until very recently when I sold it for almost a double.
