Unions won Michigan and Pennsylvania for the Democrats. I was buoyed by this fact. Been a while since we flexed our muscle like this. And, you know, the funny thing is, it wouldn't have taken too many concessions from Bush to have actually received more big union endorsements. Had Bush moved to the center on some wage, labor law and workplace safety issues, he might have won Michigan and Pennsylvania, and thus have won the election with a clear mandate. Instead, he will assume the presidency with the weakest base of support of any president in the past 120 years. He will have no foundation for which to cut deals in Congress, as Reagan did in '80 when both houses of Congress were Democratic. Bush's four years will be continuously dogged by the tag: "The loser who won the presidency." It's unfortunate, but that is the truth.
