Jim,

By why would New Mexico favor Gore over say, Colorado, Arizona or Texas who went strong Bush?

I have spent most of my life in those four states, so you have asked the right person.

Northern New Mexico is very heavily Democratic. The exception being Los Alamos which has lots of liberal PhD's, and even more conservative BSE types.

Albuquerque is a Republican stronghold, with a very strong right wing influence. At one time the Rush Limbaugh show was the most popular radio show in Albuquerque.

Eastern New Mexico is ranchers and heavily Republican. Southwestern New Mexico is mostly Hispanic and Democratic. Over time, the largest growth area has been Albuquerque, and New Mexico has been becoming increasingly Republican over time.

Arizona is Phoenix. Phoenix is retired people who don't care about anybody else, and don't want to pay for anything which isn't in their planned community. Joe Garagiola left Arizona in disgust, when the citizens turned down a bond election for a baseball stadium. I love Arizona, but the place is politically unpalatable. Where else could Evan Mecham have been elected Governor?

Colorado is another schizo state. Denver and Boulder are heavily Democratic, and the rest of the state is Republican. In particular, Colorado Springs has a law against being Democratic. You can be shot on sight for being a Democrat within ten miles of the USAFA.

Texas is broken up into many pieces. South Texas is heavily Democratic, and Dallas is all Republican. Houston, and San Antonio are largely Hispanic and Democratic. The bottom line though is that Bush is a psuedo-Texan, and he gets the vote there.
