Va Linux is a hardware supplier with plenty of competition. They have actually done lots of software stuff to get their servers to a competitive level but the world does not yet perceive them as an end to end solution. I think you have to add some value with a generalized horizontal solution such as ASP or even vertical market synthesized environments to attract the customer. Perhaps Va Linux was not aggressive enough with the suits identifying old markets becoming new markets. Going head to head with SUN and the like has to be daunting. But given time they will chip away at the edifice and find their niche, perhaps hand in hand with some software company. I can think of a few they should throw in with to supply that overall look of a complete solution, Frankly if I were supplying hardware I would look at attracting some specialty markets that are not really vertical, like wireless-fleet-warehousing and the like. They combine with embedded stuff and are a growth market.

Red Hat, to get around to a point, has also, despite good sales not found their niche. They have to penetrate some markets and get away from selling pseudo desktops until X and app availability improves. With this shifting market being a dinosaur is as strong likelihood. We are at the end of the Permian in software and everybody is trying to become the next warm blooded animal. Progressive rationalization belongs to the flexible, and open source was designed with that purpose in mind.
