Why shouldn't teachers or teachers' unions be active in the political process? Is it not their constitutional right to do such? Why is it OK for the U.S. Machine Tool Association, for example, to lobby congressmen and donate money to political parties, but it's NOT OK for unions to do similar? The chief role of the NEA is to represent its members ... to make sure they get a fair shake. And if this is best accomplished via the political process, then that is the road that will be followed. It is not the NEA's sole function to improve schools. Equal responsibility also lies with the parents, the community, the school administration, the school board and the state. My wife doesn't pay NEA dues to improve working relationships in her school. That's why school administrators get paid more than teachers.

If unions did not support the working man and working woman in the political process, then who would?
