Maybe people do this when they feel hurt, which is how John sounded to me. I think John owes you an apology for jumping to conclusions - he didn't ask you what happened during your trip that made the towns you visited scary for you. If John apologizes, I think you owe John an apology for telling him his true color showed. For you two to get in an argument is surprising and unlike both of you - so why don't you both apologize?
