Traditionally.. the Prime minister of Canada is the first world leader the new incoming President meets after his election.. I hope that if Bush does get elected in and its Jean Chretien who gets re-elected (we have our own election up here on Nov 27) his advisers do their homework and tell him the guy's real name.. (it isnt Jean Poutine - which is what Bush though 6 months ago or so.. I wonder if our Canadian comedian troupe will try to see if he's read up on Cdn political events since)

Scumbria Re..1. The deficit will explode because of large tax cuts paired with military spending increases. As in 1981.<<<<

There were deficits long before Reagan got in office; or are you trying to tell me you favored the way Carter dealt with the depression over Reagans. Secondly Clinton increased the deficits far more than Reagan did in his first 4 yrs, and we were in a depression back in 1981. What is Bills excuse? We also; considering Bills attempts to built monuments to himself and congressional porking out; will probably be in deficit spending before Bill even gets out of office. And , according to the stock market, we are heading into a recession, and deficit spending by building up the military is the normal course of action. Why would it be different this time?

RE..2. Environmental regulation will be gutted. <<<<<<

What environmental regulation? Al sold out the environment when he decided to sell down the SPC in order to buy a few extra votes from the northeast. He also rescinded his gas tax idea as outlined in his book for a few votes. Nadar was the only environmentalist left. Al has sold himself out already, and he doesn't have the spine to hold his ground against a marshmellow, much less the special interests.

Re,... Bush is clueless about the rest of the world. He doesn't even know who the Prime Minister of Canada is.<<<<

Maybe GW didn't know the prime minister of Canada that night, but at least he knows who the leaders of our enemies are; as evidenced in the second debate. I can't believe you are trying to say Al would be better in foreign affairs after Al said the Russians shouldn't be called upon to help solve the problems in Yugoslavia. All Al said in that second debate was that he agreed with GW except on the russia question; and he was proven to be wrong there within a week. And this is your intellectual genius? At least GW has Dick Cheney and likely Colin Powell to rely upon for solid advice. Who does Al have besides Joe (I think Bill is immoral)Lieberman and either Albright or some other no name Foreign Secretary.

Re He will try to manage global crises without the faintest understanding of the people he is dealing with.

I am not sure you know this, but presidents always have experts on any country in the world on staff. The trick is to have a president who is willing to listen before he makes a decision, not some know it all who can't comprehend the importance of Russia.

How about coming up with some problems that actually favor Al; instead of giving me reasons why GW should be president.

Scumbria,

He doesn't even know who the Prime Minister of Canada is.

As Stribe has pointed out Bush won't be allowed to enter Canada, so what does it matter? <ggg> When Jean Poutine shows up at the White House, I'm sure W will be very hospitable and the U.S. may even conclude major treaties with Mr. Poutine. Canada will only have their merry pranksters to blame.

Dave

Stribe, I hope you are reading this. ;-)

1. The deficit will explode because of large tax cuts paired with military spending increases. As in 1981.

The deficit increased in the 80s because of an increase in
social spending. The revenue from taxes greatly increased during the 80s but government spending increased faster.

2. Environmental regulation will be gutted.

I think the chance of this happening is not much above 0%. I do however think that the chance for new major environmental laws or regulation, that increases the power and extent of government control in this area, is very low.

3. Bush is clueless about the rest of the world. He doesn't even know who the Prime Minister of Canada is. He will try to manage global crises without the faintest understanding of the people he is dealing with.

We probably will just have to agree to disagree on this one.

Tim

Dear Scumbria:

Take a Gore victory with same positions:

1) Surplus will be spent twice over on larger governmental programs and more by increased Social Security Taxes on Young Workers because status quo on benefits maintained. Read you will be taxed at a marginal rate of 70% (hey anyone making over 70K is rich, then 60K, then 50K, etc. (democratic thinking)).

2) All internal combustion engines will be outlawed (he stated that in his book) to get to the Kyoto targets. This causes the economy to slip into deep depression causing above.

3) Gore is clueless about military readiness. Decides that all problems can be fought with military power like his old boss but, does not want to pay for it (Just like Clinton, Carter, Johnson, and Truman). Whenever things look bad, fight a small police action (war) with a seemingly week opponent (hopefully they won't hit back).

These predictions are as likely as yours.

(I do not believe either are likely)

Pete
