Dukakis should have been allowed to establish some basis for his death penalty beliefs prior to being asked that question. Half an hour later, I think it would have been a perfectly legitimate question, but it was clearly a political setup by Shaw.

I don't remember when the question was asked; if you say it was the first question, okay.

Before the debate, however, the Willy what's-his-name issue was already out, the limp noodle issue was out, and his strong stand on the death penalty had been out. I'm not sure what an extra half hour serving up lobs for him to hit would have accomplished.

I do agree, however, that if you're going to slam a hard ball down the middle for one candidate you should do it for both; you don't serve up soft, easy lobs for the other candidate under those circumstances.
