Of course the Republicans are fighting the manual recount because they are afraid it will go against them, but here is the reason why: both parties will provide teams to examine the ballots and attempt to determine what the intention of the voter was. If the counting teams are unable to agree, then the canvassing board will decide. The canvassing board in Palm Beach county are Democrats.

You seem to think that the manual recount will be clear-cut, but in fact there is room for subjectivity, and where there is subjectivity, bias comes into play, especially where the stakes are so high. The ballots ought to be examined by disinterested parties, but where can we find those?

I think Gore would feel the same way if the shoe were on the other foot.

Susan--Let's call a spade a spade and step back a few days.

The Republicans were incensed at the thought of a REVOTE, correct?

They wanted the process to be confined to existing FL recount law, correct?

One element of that recount law is a retabulation by machine, to be sure.

However, it was very well known IN ADVANCE that another element of that recount process could be a manual recount. Since the punch card method will not identify partially punched ballots where chads<pieces>sp?) of the card may not have been completely punched out, a manual process is the only way to validate those cards.

(Remember, NONE of the above has anything to do with double votes or that ballot confusion...this is a problem with the integrity of the punch card process)

Now, while a REVOTE is an extremely rare event, a MANUAL RECOUNT is OFTEN done in close elections.

Now, to paraphrase old Sam Ervin, "I'm just a country statistician from Morgantown, WV(Sam was from Morganton, NC), but I got to tell you that there is something the Republicans just plain don't want revealed as part of the manual recount"

Quod Erat Demonstradum

I don't think the republicans are scared of a manual recount, IF it is statewide and not just in heavily democratic-registered counties. Fair is fair.

How many times can the Democrats demand a recount? Until they win, through reappearing ballot boxes?

Why is Gore holding up the election for his own personal gain? He is destroying this country through his own selfishness, and his demand for power.

Having another Daley is equally troubling for all the people of the United States.
