<< To continue with a football analogy, we have Gore behind with 00:00 left, and the gun has sounded, ending the game. >>

Nope. There is less than 2 minutes left and replay is in the hands of a judge.

I just read thru Florida law. On one hand, the ballots were not set up correctly. The names must be on the left, and the order of the names must have been "Bush" followed by "Gore", then followed by minority party candidates.

That leaves the issue in the hands of a judge, where the judge could provide "any relief appropriate". This means that the judge could order a new election just for Palm Beach, if he determines that to be appropriate. Or, the judge could declare the election complete as is, after the absentee ballots and recounts. Or.......

Personally, I don't see a Judge overturning the election, even though the obvious winner was Gore.

Here is the Florida law 102.168 paragraph 8:

8. The circuit judge to whom the contest is presented may fashion such orders as he or she deems necessary to ensure that each allegation in the complaint is investigated, examined, or checked, to prevent or correct any alleged wrong, and to provide any relief appropriate under such circumstances.
