Ballot boxes trapped by bear

US election officials in the town of Cross Village, Michigan, couldn't get their ballot boxes to the count on time - because a bear trapped them inside the town hall.

The 400 pound animal refused to let the officials out of the building and even banged on the door in a bid to get in.

Police eventually had to shoot the black bear dead because of its increasingly odd behaviour and its continued presence outside the building.

Diane Call, the local township clerk, told the Detroit Free Press: "Every so often there would be a loud bang at the door, which was frightening."
