Well, let's put it this way. Some of the Republican Senators from the South are ideologically more in line with those Old time Southern Democrats.

Republican Senators like Everett Dirksen,Charles Mathias, Edward Brooke, Hugh Scott, and the great lady Margaret Chase Smith are few and far between today. And were they not around then, the Act wouldn't have passed.

Jesse Helms, Phil Gramm, Trent Lott, Thad Cochran, and Selby more closely fit the old Dixiecrat crowd.
