Democracies survive because they can change.
< No one subscribes to the company line that diversity is a strength, any more than than they believe in Santa Claus>
That is just not true, What keeps this perpetual motion going is diversity, and the tension that it creates,USSR collapsed not because of socialism (ie equalization of wealth) but because of totalitarianism, not sufficient energy. Diversity has become a brand to signify a multi hued society, but if you widen it to multi -everything, economic layers, ideas, race, religion etc. then that is Nature's model for survival. If one species dies, another takes over, if one mutation does n't work out another one does. The 3000 odd companies of the Nasdaq is diversity for you too, spread out the decision makers and we will be just fine.
Balkanization, in my view is the opposite force, like the surface tension of water seperating it into little bubbles. Little islands of sameness, would also drain the creative/destructive tension.
Before the terrible things you suggest come to pass, A) the constitution could change to something more like a parliament, which allows everyone their little space, yet works towards unity.
or B) The SP500 CEO's would huddle together to promote a better dialog, in order that the Consumer States of America may continue.
