catlady- is 1,400 out of 6,000,000 a lot? bent ballots or whatever happen and will go thru one time and not another. when i put my transit ticket in, sometimes it doesn't read it the first time. that said, i'll take the machines for accuracy over 75 year olds with coke bottle glasses (or 20 year olds with 20/10 vision for that matter) looking at tiny little punch marks. the one difference that i would think most would agree on- machines don't 'interpret' one way or the other. what we're hearing from florida is that the counters can interpret the 'intent of the voter'. that scares me and should scare anyone in a democracy. milosovich and other dictators are all for interpreting results. if we read about 'interpreting voter intent' in a 3rd world country, we would all cry foul- and for good reason. i don't want ANYONE interpreting my vote.
