OT...NM Election Results...

Scumbria, the people in charge of Bernalillo County vote counting are primarily Democrats, from Judy Woodward, our County Clerk to state District Judge Theresa Baca...the elections in Bernalillo County have involved irregularities every election I've been here, 8 and counting. However, it's clear to me that they are primarily incompetent, not malicious. The good news is that every effort has been made to count every eligible and readable vote. Given the closeness of the election across the nation, that same level of effort should be made in every county of our nation. I wish the two "leaders" would agree that for the sake of the nation a detailed recount will be conducted in every county of this country, and agree to shut up and stay out of the media for 10 days or so to let it happen.

Scumbria,

Why would you feel that hypocrisy on the part of anyone would be relevant in this instance ??

From the piece you posted;
"But Bush crept up as counting through Friday as votes from Bernalillo, the state’s largest county, were tabulated, and he edged ahead thanks mainly to a manual count of ballots that were damaged in some way and were not counted Tuesday night."

I don't believe anyone on either side has complained/been hypocritical, sent lawyers or telephone-bombed voters when the vote totals were working in their favor. <G>

JohnD-calmly & patiently waiting for next friday~

Scumbria.. this is how CBC and Canadian Press has reported the Republicans uh.. "flip-flop"

After calling Democratic threats of legal action a dangerous
escalation, Republican presidential candidate George W. Bush
took that action himself Saturday, shifting his bid to
block requests for hand recounts in Florida to a federal
court. A campaign official for Democrat Al Gore accused Bush
of hypocrisy, noting the Texas governor signed a state law favouring manual recounts in disputed elections.

While groups and individuals supporting Gore have filed lawsuits in Florida complaining of irregularities in
Tuesday's balloting, Bush becomes the first candidate to opt for direct court intervention from either of the
political parties.

Former Republican secretary of state James Baker, Bush'sobserver of the Florida recount, said a third count in
that state by hand could open the process to human error or
nefarious manipulation.

"The potential for mischief would exist to a far greater
degree," he said. "Therefore, we ask that there be no
further recounts of already recounted ballots," Baker said.

"The hand count can be completed expeditiously and it should
be," said former U.S. secretary of state Warren Christopher.

He added Bush, as governor of Texas, signed legislation specifying hand recounts be used to settle certain disputed
elections.

Bush's injunction did not stop the manual counting in Palm
Beach County. Judge Charles Burton said the recount went
ahead because no court order stopping it has been granted.

Nearby Volusia County will conduct its own manual recount of
all 184,000 ballots cast there Sunday. A West Palm Beach judge will rule on Bush's request on Monday morning.

That could lead to the dodgy public-relations situation of
Bush invalidating a recount that has already taken place.
