Keep in mind there has been TWO counts of the votes already in accordance with the law. Bush won both. I think Baker has a point about hand counts. Suppose a ballot is double punched? Counts for Gore or not?

I don't have a problem(and neither should the bush team) in a hand count for ALL the counties in FL provided the following guidelines are met:

Take 1% of the total and see if there are any problems with the ballots.

Only clearly and correctly punched ballots are counted. Double punched ballot are invalid. period. you did it wrong and thats the way the cookie crumbles.

All ballots in this hand count are to be reviewed by a represenative of both parties to ensure an fair count of the votes.

And a recount should be requested in New Mexico, Iowa, Wis. and Or to make should votes were counted correctly here too. After all this is not a constitutional issue in just Fl but every state in which the race was close.

I'll take over the responsibilities of running the country in the meantime, so they should take all the time needed to get it right.

if nothing else this is interesting although I'd sure like to see the mess over with

it is sad to me to see that this is just like most everything else in the US. the "real participants" sit back in the shadows while up front are a bunch of lawyers doing the dirty work
maybe the days of a duel to determine the winner should be brought back
who is the better shot at 10 paces?

there will be all this hoopla about the electoral college but look at the popular vote
out of 100mm votes a difference of only 200k
or 2/10ths of 1%
statistically insignificant
if that was the determining factor would not Bush push for recounts all over the country?
the must be many times more than that in uncounted absentee ballots
maybe this mess would be even worse

at some point many people are just going to say "get it over" not caring who wins
and the legitimacy of either will be tainted

maybe the only good that will come from this will be more than 50% or so voting in the next election

as a side note i tend to see many things from a tilted perspective
is it just me or is it rather ironic that for a year one of Bush's main themes has been:
"Gore trusts big govt, I TRUST THE PEOPLE"
but now the bush camp says:
"WE TRUST MACHINES MORE THAN WE TRUST PEOPLE"

make one go hmmmmmmm

I may have been somewhat hasty in my statments. I received this from a friend back east. A little civics lesson wouldn't hurt at this point in time while we wait for the results of the re-count of the re-count of the re-count.....
