<<I was a bit (though no more than a bit) curious to know what would have happened if I had failed that test in New Zealand. Anyone know?>>

typically, they take your car keys away from u, haul u in their car to a police station, where a doctor will administer a blood test (if u choose to have one). Then ask u to find your way home & come back 24 hours later to pick up the keys.

If u're a NZ resident, u get one of these not-so-polite letters requesting u to appear in court at a future date, and get slapped with a hefty fine and/or suspension of driving privileges. If u're a visitor, u spend the night as a guest of Her Majesty, showup in court the following morning (assume its not a weekend), and pay a double-hefty fine and they suspend your driving priviliges for the duration of your visit.

And if I were a convicted felon surving time and had tried to vote, what would have been explained differently?

Well, that depends on what you mean by "surving". I suppose that it could be a sentence to stay on your surf board for 10 years without parole. Or it could be a struggle to surv-ive for x years.

BTW, but in any case, it would be the guys who processed your voter registration that would have explained it to you. After they collected your "pole" tax, gave you a literacy test, and given you a personality test to make sure you are not too shy to vote, they would have asked you if you had ever been convicted of a felony. With that driving record of yours, that would have been a close call!
