Combjelly, <The ES-40 uses a chipset designed for the 21164 and is notorious for poor memory throughput with the 21264. It was originally designed as a stopgap, but with the Compaq buyout development of the replacement was slow in coming.>

That reminds me of the time when AMD claimed Athlon with its EV6 bus was going to leverage the Alpha infrastructure. Kind of funny how the development of that infrastructure has not materialized as AMD hoped, and now they're left carrying the whole burden on their own.

As for the 760MP chipset, I still think that the design lopsided the bandwidth way too much on the EV6 buses. The single DDR SDRAM channel is going to be overburdened. Now, if the chipset had two DDR channels, the story would be much different, but it doesn't. (I think AMD and/or one of its partners was working on a dual-EV6, dual-DDR chipset. I don't know what happened to it, or why AMD isn't announcing plans for such a chipset if they haven't dropped it already.)
