It is a swing district. The southern and northern districts are Republican and Democratic, but Albuquerque is very closely balanced. They usually have a Democratic House seat. And anyway, the change there was not the result of a "manual recount" it was the result of a computer programming error. The computer didn't score the "straight line" votes correctly, and since there were more straight line Republican voters than Democratic, fixing the software resulted in more Republican votes. In fact, the whole election problems have largely been computer software issues... No question that if the Republicans had manually recounted the heavily Republican sections of Florida, they would have picked up proportionally more votes for Republicans. That they didn't is a sign that they were stupid. I voted for Bush, but the fact is that I really don't mind seeing Gore in the White House. Whoever takes the election is going to be seen by the other party as illegitimate, so Gore will be as bad off as Clinton, but the Republicans will still control the House and Senate, and will likely pick up more seats in the by election. Besides, when the Republicans hold all three corners, they always end up $h:tting on themselves. It's better for the Republicans to have a Democrat in the White House. On the other hand, there are things that only a Republican in the WH can do, like reduce the military budget in favor of the space program. As long as the Democrats hold the WH, we will make no real progress (or positive influence) on China. -- Carl
