The markets are looking for the next "internet investment" IMO. What better than companies whose earnings may very well explode in the coming years with a realization of oils eventual world wide depletion. I think we saw a little spark when it came to the alternative energy stocks this summer.

Could you imagine OXY selling at a PE of 20 for example or VPI selling it's replacement reserves value of maybe $10 a barrel. Both triple their present levels. The market still sees $10 oil in our future, when she decides it won't be there we may all be singing a different tune. I agree some boom bust's may still be ahead of us but 10 years from now we may all look back at this unfolding story and wish we never sold a single share of anything "oily".
