Scumbria,

RE <<Aren't the interests of the voters to be considered? The candidates are a reflection of the 50 million voters who supported them. It would be irresponsible not to fight to the bitter end.>>

Well-stated. And BOTH sides assert this to be the justification for anything/everything they say and do to further THEIR side.
I rest my case. <G>

JohnD-going out to enjoy the N.E. sunshine~

The US ballot counting system, with all its imperfections which are surfacing, is still very effective in serving the needs of almost all voters. In this sense the interests of the voters were and continue to be considered. Ideally the ballot counting system would be perfect, but if we wait for development of such a system, I fear democracy will have come and gone before a vote gets cast...I just think it becomes highly risky in a negative sense to, after the voters have spoken, firstly, define the nature and number of acceptable "imperfections" (unless criminal intent can be shown, of course) and, secondly, to interpret accurately, the intent of any and all ballot "imperfections"...Just opens up the system to a whole lot of potential "dirty tricks" after the fact, imho!!!

By the way, I see that we Canadians have a new ballot system, that is designed to "spit out" imperfections at the time of the ballot, thereby allowing the voter a second ballot attempt...looks like we've learned very rapidly, as is the Canadian way, from the potential negative consequences that can swirl around spoiled ballots...

Ted I hope you read this. This type of fanaticism is dangerous. This type of stuff is what Jessie is talking about. How many lawyers is it going to take , how many yrs can we wait, how many people must die in a civil war before we realize the end's don't justify the means. The ballot will likely never be resolved to either sides satisfaction, because the margin of error in any style of vote counting is greater than the difference in the vote count; and no legal decision can make it otherwise. No matter how right you think you are; sometimes the best choice is to walk away.
