What is this underlying reason that Bush-Cheney received so little support among blacks? I took a little license to invert the sentence order. I don't think we can equate only Repubs (thus eliminating Dems) with mainstream white America. I wish I were as mainstream, white, and enfranchised as Gore has been. It is true that at the moment Blacks are venting their anger solely at conservatives. Secondly, I don't consider conservatism to be primarily about economics or conserving personal wealth. That, to me, is more a logical conclusion of conservatism. I think libs don't like conservatives because we want to hold as closely as possible to the constitution, and to refer to it as directly (literally even) as possible. (AT huge risk: kind of like religious conservatives want to read the Bible at face value, and liberals find it a good spring board). That's a judicial difference, for instance. Liberals have been able to accomplish judicially what has not been accomplished legislatively, and primarily through liberal judicial activist judges. So it seems to conservatives. It pisses em off because suddenly the "rules" get changed for special circumstances. But to democratic constituancies, my theory is not very flattering, no doubt since I am so uninformed. My parents grew up yellow dog democrats from Arkansas. I campaigned and voted McGovern. But a funny thing happened on the way to starting a family, making ends meet, and watching dems crusade more and more for things I could not encourage my kids or others to do. Conservatives looked more at home to my (no doubt prejudiced) white ass. But back to my theory. I think Warren Penn said it best in All the Kings Men..."just tell them you are going to stick it to the fat cats." That simple. Tell poor folks that taking less of the rich man's money is "spending tax money" on them, or giving them corporate welfare. Takers vote democratic because of what they hope to get. Repubs vote to try to keep the feds out of their pockets and to keep govament at a distance as much as possible. The popular stereotype is that libs need the gov to collect as much money, figure out what they think deserves it, then create ways to spend it on projects better left to their own resources. In short, to Gop the dems are takers, and to dems the GOP are selfish haters. As long as that sells we will have politics as they are, IMO. Time to see how my fantasy football guys are doing. BBL
