"Broken Hearted" Republicans
By Tom Bevan

Republicans around the country are watching the events unfolding in Florida and shaking their heads, wondering "How did it come to this?" A few weeks ago Byron York profiled a section of the electorate he called "Broken Glass" Republicans, so named because their desire to elect George Bush and take back the White House was so great they would walk through broken glass to cast their votes. In the wake of Tuesday's incredibly close election and the chaos that has sprung from it, most Republicans around the country can now more accurately be described as "broken hearted."

Stymied on Tuesday by massive black and union turnout in key urban areas and their get-out-the-vote effort viciously undercut by the national networks' incorrect calling of Florida, Republicans are now clinging to the hope that Bush will prevail. But even if he does, the victory will be tarnished, hollowed out by a probable loss in the popular vote and Democrat allegations of illegitimacy.

To make matters worse, Republicans are now forced to watch in rage as Gore operatives continue to ignore two vote counts and parade through south Florida using high-minded phrases like "the will of the people" and "disenfranchisement" in an attempt to win the election by winning public opinion. But behind the scenes an army of lawyers is digging through legal precedent, poking and prodding for weaknesses they can exploit to Mr. Gore's benefit.

Republicans are truly broken hearted to watch the entire country held hostage by the incompetence of the voters of Palm Beach County and Mr. Gore's reliance on their stupidity to win the presidency. There was no effort to "defraud" these citizens of their votes or deny them any rights and privileges due to them as stipulated by Florida election law. Yet the Constitution and our system of electoral government now hangs in the balance and Democrats seem more than willing to damage both to keep Mr. Gore in power.

And now, as America watches the Palm Beach County canvass board on CNN hold ballot after ballot aloft in the light and squint at them as if they were trying to read tea leaves, there is no question that Republicans have been robbed of impartiality in this process.

In the minds of many Republicans, November 7 was supposed to be the end of a national nightmare, not a continuation of it. Now, as the hand recounts continue in four overwhelmingly Democratic counties and the deadline for additional hand recounts is past, "broken hearted" Republicans will have to watch, wait, and hope that their candidate can crawl across the finish line still in one piece.
