The reaction all comes down to context--whether somebody is part of your group or not. Those who try not to belong to a particular group or think outside the box are usually villified

An interesting notion, but certainly not one that I find supported by the actual history of the thread. There is considerable diversity of opinion among thread regulars, diversity which is not only tolerated but enjoyed and encouraged. When new voices present new ideas, those ideas are received with interest or not largely on their relevance to the theme of the thread and/or the politeness with which they are presented. The only ones "attacked" are those who persist in consuming bandwidth with perspectives that are inappropriate for the thread, e.g., very short term strategies, or who fail to remain polite and respectful of others.

My own reaction to your claim of your gains since April 99 was primarily to think that it really doesn't tell us what your approach will do long term. Lots of folks have had their good stretches, but few manage to continue at that sort of pace. As to the tone, I find quite a difference between LindyBill's "gosh, look what I did despite all the mistakes I made" approach and yours which certainly did seem to suggest that we should be paying attention to what you say because of your success.

As for the Cisco numbers, if you think there are interesting issues revealed in those measures you cited, please present them. We are not above having a lively discussion of such things as illustrated by the recent exchange on pooling of assets. But, there are just too many things to learn out there for me to feel terribly motivated to look in to Cisco's DSO, for example, merely because someone has wondered why people don't seem to care about it without having given us any real clue about what the interest might be.

If you truly think I believe addressing fundamental issues revealed in the financial statements such as the ones you bring to light is thinking outside the box, I've apparently given you the wrong impression

What gave me this impression was your statement from your earlier post:

"When a particular methodology stresses understanding certain aspects of a business model and the competitive environment in which it operates, nothing should be inferred about the issues that are not addressed by that methodology."

Perhaps you meant that in some other way, and perhaps we are getting a little off the path into philosophy and some personal issues as well. I do not feel like going into those exchanges. Why don't we forget about those and if you care to discuss the case at hand (CSCO), great.
