<Florida has no uniform set of standards for a manual recount. It is wide open to each individual precinct's interpretation...>

Not only that, but I see no language prohibiting a county canvassing board from initiating a manual recount, in the case of a protest of the returns of the election, regardless of whether a request for manual recount was filed within 72 hours after midnight of the date the election was held...

Can Bush not still protest the results in the counties favoring him? ...

"(2) Such protest shall be filed with the canvassing board prior to the time the canvassing board certifies the results for the office being protested or within 5 days after midnight of the date the election is held, whichever occurs later."

...and the respective county canvassing boards proceed with manual recounts even absent a specific request? ...

"(c) The county canvassing board may authorize a manual recount. If a manual recount is authorized, the county canvassing board shall make a reasonable effort to notify each candidate whose race is being recounted of the time and place of such recount."

Will we see protests tonight of election results by the Bush camp in counties carried by Bush?

And I respectfully suggest, Mason, that you do NOT understand the historical precedents on the precinct level where the "blue hair grunt work" actually occurs and has been occuring for several decades. There is a protocol and there are observers. To accuse those dedicated people of either sloth or slovenly execution of their sworn duty is unconscionable and irresponsible rhetoric.

All handwringers, IN MY OPINION, have forgotten that hand counting was the way it was done before machines, which have unequivocally also proven themselves to be UNreliable and not just in this election either.

The republic will survive, it's just that one team of candidates won't. Long live the Republic.
