<The GOP has blathered and litigated over the hand recount: wouldn't it be delightful if they themselves resorted to this "unfair and partisan" process in order to try to grab a few more votes of their own?>

Couldn't help myself ... this keeps going on and on and on. Sounds like you have already made up your mind. For democrats to search until they find the answer they want seems to be OK, depending upon the virtue of the other party to let them get away with it.

Hand recounts are not accurate in the least. Just give 10 people simple directions and see if you get the same result from each. The more time this goes on, the more time all these precincts will have to doctor the results. One precinct already was found to be "reconstructing" the ballots that had been thrown out because voters couldn't follow simple directions.

On the other hand, at least machines are consistent. And an approved recount has already been accomplished with the results not changing. I have already heard that the Florida voting system will not be able to stand up to further scrutiny (my bet is most states systems wouldn't hold up either).

Did you read about the teacher who asked her 6th grade class to fill in the spot for Al Gore on a sample Florida ballot. All got it right!

Maybe what we need is to require passing a test in order to be able to vote.

This is not a contest for lead in the local school play. It's very important to get the most accurate result possible. But hand counting is not the way to get there -- it's the way to create more turmoil. And that turmoil will begin to shake the foundation of our system. Who will declare a winner? And when? Will the Speaker of the House take the reins in January? And for how long? I don't think we want to test the system this way.
