" I can't distinguish hate crimes from any other kind, even though the state of mind of the criminal is IMO irrelevant to the severity of the crime. I measure severity from the objective impact on the victims -- degree of injury, loss of income and wealth, pain and suffering. "

Well said I am glad to hear that is your position. You are absolutely right on the above. As far as hate speech I think what we have here is more fed up and annoyed speech. Nader hit it right on the head when he said people are fed up with the lack of control in their lives. Sadly we all see it differently. Liberals see the conservatives as trying to take away the right to chose and conservatives see liberals trying to take away everything that they create and work for. To me hate speech was when the Black Caucus came back from Cuba saying that Cubans were better off than minorities in this country. That was hate speech. When a Blood or a Crypt gets shot in the street we the tax payers pay for his treatment. In Cuba he would die. In Cuba people with Aids are removed from society and isolated by law.
I think that most conservative as well as liberals want people to be free. Unfortunately we are used as pawns and pitted against each other by the elite.
