Elmer, thanks for the technology post.

Once again AMD appears to have problems manufacturing devices with large on-die caches.

So, the Palomino, server and workstation version, slated for H1 01 on their roadmap, doesn't have a big cache? In any case, they have it as intended for 1P and 2P only, so probably not.

Intel needs an upgrade just based on what AMD canceled and/or slipped.

Elmer, I think the cancellation of Mustang might be due to several factors:

1) Yield problems with large on-die caches, as you suggest. Though AMD could just brute-force their way through the yield troubles, point #2 would explain why that strategy would be impractical ...

2) AMD is having less success penetrating the business markets, so they want to focus their limited resources on their traditional strengths, which are retail markets and home users.

3a) Their server chipset and infrastructure development is way behind in schedule.

3b) Lack of third-party support. Hotrail cancelled their plans for an 8-way Athlon chipset, and VIA continues to make nothing more than a haphazard effort in 2-way SMP.

3c) Strong execution in server chipsets coming from Intel and ServerWorks.

I think you already mentioned #1 and #3a, but I also wanted to bring to light other factors which could spell doom in AMD's grand plans for servers and workstations.

Elmer - Re: ". It has puzzled me for some time why the output of their 2 large fabs is rather low and here again we see AMD canceling a product which it would seem they need in their portfolio. SMP performs better with large ondie cache and that's what Mustang brought to the table. "

Looks like they don't allow horses in the kitchen - because Mustank never made it to the table.
