Hi Greg,

You probably know the story, but for the newbies here:

The thing that is really impressive is Monticello.

Just as with the Sydney Opera House, the tricky roof structures and lack of suitable concern for appropriate roof flashings has meant that each building has leaked in the rain since they were first erected.

It shows off his genius in numerous ways...
One of those frequently mentioned was the dumbwaiter which was contributory to..........

too bad it almost bankrupt him

When Jefferson died, he was about $7.2 MM in debt. No mean feat for a landholder in his day. His heirs were of good moral and ethical stock and rather than renege on the payments and declare bankruptcy the family paid the debt off over the next 52 years. The lavish lifestyle of Mr. Jefferson was greatly enhanced by that dumbwaiter, bringing expensive Madeiras up from the cellar, to lavish on himself and his guests. To today's observer, Jefferson seems less the Polymath of the Enlightenment and more the profligate bon vivant. Such is the constant re-writing of our past.
He was, unquestionably though, pretty good with the turn of a phrase.
